A big July for Kentucky Oaks Mall
New stores, new renovation, yet access remains easy
The month of July will be very busy at Kentucky Oaks Mall in Paducah. Immediately after the Independence Day weekend, renovation work will get underway to upgrade the interior and exterior of the mall. At the same time, a long-awaited highway project is unfolding in front of the mall on U.S. 60 (Hinkleville Road). Despite all this construction, the mall will still remain accessible to customers.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the connecting ramps at the Interstate 24/U.S. 60 Paducah Exit 4 interchange will close from July 8 until August 12.
The closure will allow crews to complete work on a new Double Diamond interchange to increase road capacity and improve safety. Traffic will be detoured to the I-24/KY 305 (Cairo Road) Paducah Exit 3 Interchange. From that interchange, drivers should take Olivet Church Road and bear left on New Holt Road, which directly accesses the mall complex. Local commuters are encouraged to travel to and from the mall area via New Holt Road, Pecan Drive, and James-Sanders Boulevard. U.S. 60 will remain open west of James-Sanders Boulevard along the mall shopping area, with all access points open.
During this same time period, work will be underway to “refresh” the property, with the installation of new carpeting, lighting, furniture, décor, electronic infrastructure and landscaping. Most of the work will take place in the overnight hours after the mall is closed for business.
Quick Facts:
- Renovation project completion: October 1, 2019
- 19,000 new carpet squares will be installed (enough to cover a football field, and then some)
- 1,600 LED light fixtures will be installed, saving 57,000 watts of energy a year.
- 15,000 feet of cable is being installed for security and information systems.
While renovation work is taking place in the mall’s common areas, workers are also creating spaces for popular new stores. Ross Dress for Less is expected open for business on July 20 at 9am. In what used to be an Elder-Beerman department store, a 24,000 square foot Homegoods is taking shape, next to a 35,490 square foot Five Below. Both of those stores will be open by November. Negotiations are progressing with other retailers and announcements of their arrival are pending.
